Prologue

1977

The intruder entered the house warily, walked calmly behind the couch and slipped the wire around the neck of the disoriented occupant. The victim’s eyes bulged, then registered surprise and dazed recognition. Piano wire! Blood began to seep instantly as the fine wire sliced tentatively into the soft fold of the neck.

The struggle began—arms flailed, legs jerked and the victim thrashed about powerlessly. Something’s wrong. This is not a fight for life, not a last-ditch effort for survival. The struggle was weak; very little force exerted—just a masked attempt to remove the constricting vice from the neck. I’ve got to proceed, it’s the only way out.

The overpowering, acrid smell of thick, dark red blood assailed the invader. A gagging, staccato sound suddenly escaped through parched lips; then a low, guttural growl erupted, and the attacker yanked tightly, completely severing the air passage. The wire struck bone and disappeared.

The body slumped against the bloodstained couch. Death hovered briefly and staked its final claim. Mission accomplished—the deed done. The killer left through the front door and wiped all fingerprints from the doorknob.

This murder stunned Jack Burns and Henry Richardson, the Kiwi County investigators assigned to the case. They’d never seen anything as gruesome. This was no ordinary killing. This was a sophisticated, upscale murder, completely out of place in this rural, black neighborhood. They’d primed themselves for the usual razor-slit horror or the more familiar gun-blast scene here in Shanty Town, but this slaughter left them in awe.

Everything about this murder baffled them. The whole scenario posed them a major challenge because of the meticulous planning involved and its deadly execution. Not one clue remained. This was not the last minute, emotional slaying they’d expected. The killing had all the elements of a professional, outside hand.
