Subject: BURT RICHARDS FEATURE & BOOK REVIEW
By Doc Lawrence

If you've lived in Broward, Palm Beach or the Miami area for any length of time, you'd be hard put not to have read or heard about Burt Richards. The quintessential friend and confident of that coterie of the rich and famous who continue to give South Florida the glitz and glamour that has created much of the tropical style mystique that attracts tourists the world over, Richards, an affable and very approachable man, is the real deal. His life is literally studded by a bevy of glamorous friendships that cover the spectrum from movie starlets like Jane Russell and Connie Stevens to television legends like Ed Asner and Bob Hope.

Much of Burt Richard’s newsworthy relationships with popular legends is documented in his latest book, “Stars In My Eyes Then and Now,” which is loaded with articles and interviews of myriad stars along with photos, comments and some assorted but very interesting trivia that even includes some of their likes and dislikes.

The world of Burt Richards is a close-up tour de force of what it’s like to live in our world as a prominent educator, writer and celebrity interviewer. As a writer, Richards is perhaps best known for his theatre reviews which add up to a series of columns he says number in excess of 55,000, an astonishing number by any journalistic standard.

As a chronicler of the entertainment world for over 40 years, Richards has some mighty fine stories to tell in his fascinating collection of 38 capsules of these stars. It’s easy to get immersed in the highly readable, often hilarious accounts by Richards who has the rare ability to transpose his interviews to paper while perfectly maintaining the tone of an intimate conversation. If You want to know much more about stars like Shirley MacLaine and Rona Barrett, then grab this book, open something cold from the refrigerator and get into that comfortable poolside chair.

It’s easy to overlook all of Burt Richard’s other accomplishments including his being the recipient of a Carbonnel Award, one of Florida’ most prestigious tributes in the performing arts, for his production of the highly acclaimed musical, “Nite Club Confidential.” Another musical, “Broadway’s Best Musical Hits From Forgotten Shows,” became an almost instant favorite with locals, snowbirds and international visitors.

Burt Richards began establishing his professional credentials in 1961 with numerous appearances and leading roles in New York’s Off Broadway stage and in television, movies and Big Apple commercials. A longtime South Florida resident and no stranger to Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, he occupies the lofty status as one of the Sunshine State’s highest profile and busiest actors, lecturers and educators. Richards, propelled by a reservoir of seemingly limitless energy, still performs for many respected charitable events where he specializes in the songs of Frank Sinatra.

Richard’s book has too many anecdotes for a single column but some really deserve sharing. His interview with actress and onetime pinup girl, Jane Russell takes the reader back to her days with Howard Hughes who invented a seamless bra for Russell who hated it and camouflaged one of her own to fool Hughes who never knew the difference. Richards also relates Jane Russell’s stories about her relationship with Marilyn Monroe, who says in the book “Marilyn was like a little sister to me.” According to Ms. Russell, who established a friendship while filming the movie classic “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” Monroe “was a shy girl and was afraid to go out on the set.” Ms. Russell would stop by her dressing room and say, “Come on baby, let’s go; and she would get up and go along with me.”

The Jane Russell, Marilyn Monroe movie is shown regularly on Turner Classic Movies and Richards inquired if Ms. Russell received any revenues from current telecasts. “No. I was paid $400. 000 for the role, back in 1953.”

“Stars In My Eyes Then and Now” is enjoyable and very human.” Because we know most of the subjects interviewed by Mr. Richards, his pleasant and intriguing questions and the responsive answers take on some extra power. This is a fine beach companion and if you keep it in your car, you have a good chance to get Richards to autograph it. He is a public man and appears somewhere here almost everyday.
