REVIEWS

STARS IN MY EYES THEN AND NOW

by Burt Richards

BOOK REVIEW BY FRED KARR May 2004

Mr. Fredric H. Karr is the book Reviewer for the Palm Aire Magazine and Broward News. Member of the District Of Columbia Bar and retired Federal Government Attorney.

"Were you a good student?"

"Favorite pig-out foods?"

"Any pet peeves?"

These are but three of the many questions, which Burt Richards poses to his subjects in the entertainment world in his exciting and delightful book, STARS IN MY EYES THEN AND NOW.

As a chronicler of the entertainment world for over 40 years, Burt is exceptionally well qualified to present capsules for 38 of entertainment's most glamorous personalities. Plus, he is also the feature writer for entertainment for the Senior News.

Stars In My Eyes Then & Now is easy reading, and the pages just seem to fly by. Among the entertainers portrayed include Bob Hope, Wayne Newton, Stacy Keach, Dionne Warwick, Rona Barrett, and Shirley MaClain.

The separate columns average about six or seven pages and are never more then ten pages in length. Since they are short, they can be sampled like bite-sized candies.

The book presents 17 question-and-answer sessions, and several of the answers bear repeating. For the inquiry "Were you a good student?" Loretta Lynn is heard to reply, "I sure was, I marked the papers."

For the query "What is your favorite pig-out food?" Julie Budd replies with her own question, "Is it Kosher?" As for pet peeves, the encounter with Jack Palance is worth noting:

"Q. What are your pet peeves?"

"A. We went over them."

"Q. What are your pet likes?"

"A. The opposite of my pet peeves.

Regarding cutesy quotes, Jane Russell is heard to say that being a grandmother "is fun, and you don't have to take care of them al day." A certain Barbara Eden outlook is "If gentlemen prefer blondes, then I'm a blonde who prefers gentlemen." And Burt reports that Frank (3orshin states that "he was a pretty good student and graduated with high honors, and he told me that he sat next to Marjorie Honors."

Many of us are fans of useless trivia, and Stars In My Eyes Then & Now ,certainly provides it. As just one example, we learn that Wayne Newton " was one of only two talents that did not make it to the Ted Mack amateur hour, the other was Elvis Presley."

Although the views of the stars comprise the bulk of the book, the author, nonetheless, throws in some of his own thoughts, which are worth pondering. As for acting duos, Burt notes that it "is sometimes difficult to separate the two actors, but that's what show business is all about as one star outshines the other with more work and notoriety than others."

Another Burt Richards outlook is that "Actors get more roles than female actresses." With the plethora of female thespian superstars, I wonder; but even if you're right on this one, Burt, it's still a close call. One of Frank Gorshin's answers to a Burt Richards query left me puzzled. In response to the Burt question about what his pet peeves were, Frank informed that he is annoyed by "handicapped parkers, who park in the regular zones."

Even though I have qualified for a handicapped tag for many years, I can still walk with reasonable agility; accordingly, there have been many times that I have parked in a regular space and walked the distance. On more than one occasion, other people have remarked that I have done a "mazel" or "mitzvah."

Maybe Frank is miffed by handicapped drivers who display their tags when parking in a regular space (I personally don't); he doesn't say. However, I believe that in most jurisdictions, a handicapped driver can properly display his tag in a regular space if all of the surrounding handicapped spaces are occupied. C'mon, Frank, go easy on us physically challenged folks! Why just have stars figuratively before your eyes when you can have them literally before your optics in book form? Since Burt Richards has done all the hard work in preparing STARS IN MY EYES THEN AND NOW you, the reader, have the easy and delightful "task" of picking up this fun work. To paraphrase the ending of Mr. Richard's interviews, thanks Burt! The book sells for $20 and is available from your local book stores, Libraries, Amazon Barnes, Borders and if you order from Abebooks.com they will have it personally autographed for you from the author.

Many of us have fanaticized at one time or another as to how it would feel sitting down with one of our favorite Hollywood celebrities and having a conversation with them.

Actor, writer, and celebrity interviewer, Burt Richards, had the good fortune to devote much of his adult life to meeting and conversing with many well - known actors and actresses, as well as other personalities. Stars In My Eyes Then And Now is a compilation of some of Richards’ interviews and information he gleaned as it pertains to such personalities as: Jane Russell, Eli Wallach, Jayne Meadows, Bob Hope, Joan Rivers, Edward Asner, Robert Klein, Jack Palance, Dionne Warwick, Shirley MacLaine, and many more.

Although Richards’ interviews are not as in depth as the ones you would view on the television program "Inside the Actor’s Studio," hosted by James Lipton, they are nonetheless entertaining and provide a good read.

Richards displays a keen perception as to which buttons to push when posing questions to his guests, and some of these actors, contrary to what we may have previously believed, do come across as down to earth human beings. As an example, Jack Palance’s modesty is very apparent when Richards poses the question, how did winning an Oscar change his life? The reply, "It does not change at all. It’s the same." Julie Budd’s answer to Richards question are you dating or married, her reply was, yes but you're a Yenta! I have to admit that some of the questions Richards did ask required a certain amount of "chutzpah,"- no doubt, an essential quality necessary to be an effective interviewer.

Peppered throughout the book are also some humorous quotes from interviewees. When Ed Asner was asked how would he like his funeral to be held? His reply was, "I have dreamed of having my body aboard a huge boat, filled with about 100 people and a big band with plenty of corned beef, lox, rye bread, have a great party and then dump me at sea for the sharks to have a good time."

However, having made this comment, anyone who enjoys reading about some of the old time Hollywood celebrities’ gastronomical likes and dislikes, their favorite producers, their love life, their acting experiences, and some personal tidbits, will find Richards’ short biographical sketches, interviews and anecdotes very interesting and informative. One point that the author did indicate that Bob Hope died on July 15th, 2003.
